Digital inventory management in research

DÜPERTHAL connect in use at the Institute of Natural Product Technology, TU Dresden

Initial situation

At the Institute for Natural Product Technology of the Technical University of Dresden, a wide range of chemicals, consumables and technical components are used daily. The inventories had so far been recorded predominantly manually or in a decentralized manner. This led to time-consuming searches and made access to safety data sheets more difficult. There was no overview of the current stock, such as the number and contents (weight/ Volumen) of the
containers.

Challenge

The lack of transparency in inventory levels made it difficult to track materials, led to delays in orders and posed a potential safety risk. Storage locations were often not clearly assigned, and safety data sheets were not directly available because they had been stored in an unstructured way, partly digitally and partly on paper. A central overview of existing substances, their exact locations and compliance with safety requirements was only available through Excel sheets.

Our solution

DÜPERTHAL connect was introduced for the structured management of laboratory inventories and the centralization of safety data sheets. The software helps the team to digitally map all storage locations, systematically record materials and store safety-relevant information directly in the system.

  • Searchable inventory overview and digital storage location management
  • Recording and management of chemicals, batteries, gases and consumables
  • Display of hazard warnings and safety documents
  • Warning for incompatible co-storage
  • Integration of the GESTIS substance database
  • Export functions for inventory lists and safety checks
  • Digital representation of cabinets, fume hoods and storage rooms

The result

By introducing DÜPERTHAL connect, the time required for searching for materials was reduced. Inventory tracking is now possible at any time, safety information is systematically stored and quickly accessible. This enables laboratory personnel to work in a more structured way, place reorders more selectively, and minimize safety-critical sources of error.

Over 1,700 recorded chemicals and more than 50 digital storage locations.

Better overview of the actual inventory (number and size of containers).

Early warnings in the event of multiple cases of potentially incompatible storage.

100% of safety data sheets are stored digitally and accessible to everyone at any time.

Export of inventory and safety records for audits in under one minute.
